The Badlands South Dakota - Saturday, Sunday 22nd-23rd May 2010

Had a rough night last night in Wind Cave NP.  The area was on a tornado and extreme thunderstorm alert and boy did it turn it on.  The tornado hit further north but the lightning and thunder storm was definitely extreme.  The worst I have ever seen.  The lightning was like strobe lights flashing non stop for about an hour and the thunder was just one continuous rumble with no breaks so I guess it was right over the top of us.  We had the slide outs pulled in to avoid damage to the rv but it rocked and rolled a bit.  Anyway, after about an hour everything started to die down and we finally got to sleep.

Saturday we took off towards the Badlands.  We drove the back road into Rapid City stopping for lunch at Pectola Lake on the way.  Thought we might have stayed a night in Rapid City but it was too big for us so we kept going on to Wall where they have this huge drug store with all manner of touristy gadgets and food.  We must have seen about 50 billboards advertising the place on the way and it must work because this little town was full of tourists.
Inside Wall Drug done up like a street

Arrived in the Badlands in the afternoon where we were greeted with more unusual and beautiful scenery AND WARM WEATHER which was great.  Sunday, we got the hiking boots on and did some exploring.  We walked 4 different trails to Cedar Pass, The Door, The Window and The Notch.  We had to watch out for rattle snakes as there were warning signs everywhere although the only ones we saw were on the highway, some dead and some alive.

After our strenuous efforts of the morning we sat IN THE SUN in the afternoon and relaxed.  Even got a little sunburnt.
