Close encounters of the third division due to a time warp on the A40 (two Ronnies) – Thursday, 27th May 2010

Left Rocky Point this morning and travelled to the Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, yes another state again. This is where they filmed the landing of the aliens in ‘Close Encounters of the third kind’ in 1977. We took a 1.3mile hike around the base of the tower which is about 1,200 feet high above the river below it. There were at least half a dozen people actually climbing via ropes to the top. Must be nuts. To do this, all you have to do is sign a waiver form stating that you are responsible for your own safety. We were told that there has only been about 5 deaths since 1967. Five too many for my liking. We’ve camped right at the bottom of the tower in the campground which is right next to the field where the aliens landed but is now just full of prairie dogs. Took another hike up to the shops where we ran into the two ladies that went on the Adams House tour with us in Deadwood. They are of Irish decent and used to live in Alaska. Very interesting people. We have exchanged contact details and hope to see them again in the future. Excellent to meet you Cilla and Christine.
