A week in Pennsylvania

We stayed in the driveway of John's brother Ed's place for a week so here are a few of the things  we got up to.

This is the Jim Thorpe memorial in the town of Jim Thorpe, he was an Indian athlete who won numerous medals in the Olympics in the early 1900's.  He excelled in many sports including football which he played for many years in the town of Carlisle.  He was good at almost any sport you can think of including dancing.   He was born in Belmont Oklahoma but when it came to putting up a memorial to him his home town didn't want it.  The little town of  Montauk said they would have it and changed the name of the town to Jim Thorpe.  Oklahoma now want the memorial in their state but the town of Jim Thorpe will never let it go.  Good on them.

We went downtown in Lancaster to the Central Market Square

We went for a tour  through the Harley Davidson factory in York, there was high security with no phones or cameras allowed inside so no photos of the production but it was a very interesting and informative tour

After our tour we went on to Gettysburg which was the scene of the biggest and bloodiest battle of the American Civil War.

There was an extensive museum which took quite a while to go through

They also had a diorama which was painted in about 1812 and has recently been restored and rehoused to make a very impressive display

Got to sit with Abe Lincoln

The scene of the Gettysburg address

Part of the battlefield, looks peaceful enough these days.  Hard to believe over 50,000 men and boys died here.

We also went to Longwood Gardens

This property was owned by Pierre Du Pont a high profile business man who bought the 1,077 acre farm in the early 1900's to preserve the trees on it.

Got a couple of sneaky photos of the Amish

They don't like to be photographed

How's this for a tree house

We listened to a recital in here of a 10,000 pipe organ

Giant water lillies, note the size in comparison to the glasses

The grotto

The conservatory in the background is 4 acres in size and was built between 1919 and 1921

The 14,000 plus pieces of the fountain area have all been dismantled cleaned and rebuilt over the last 2 years and the overall effect is spectacular.  It's impossible to show all of it in a couple of photos.

They put on a fantastic show to music with the fountain similar to Balagio in Las Vegas.  At night it is illuminated.

We found Johnny and June's garden

We took a bicycle ride through the Amish countryside

Covered bridges

Conastoga River

Amish at work

Lush green fields

More Amish

We went to Intercourse on the way to Paradise

Had fun shopping in Kitchen Kettle Amish Village

Sunday 3rd September 2017

We managed to get in touch with Judy and Perry whom we met on our travels in the states 7 years ago.  We went out for a fabulous lunch and had a good catch up on what we had all done since the last time we saw them.  They were both just as great as the last time we saw them and it was just like we had only seen them weeks ago.

Today was also Crabfest day at Ed and Carols which is a big event they put on every year.  We were invited 7 years ago and couldn't make it but were happy to attend this year.

Grass mowed lawn prepared

Marque set ready to go

Hughie got to the third round in the Corn Toss competition
