Saturday 11th August 2018 - Newberry Volcano - Oregon

Saturday 11th August 2018

Today we came across a volcano and lava flow area near Bend Oregon.  It was a really interesting site.  The caldera was about 40 miles away and called Paulina Lakes.  The Newberry volcano was a cinder cone that erupted about 7,000 years ago so is 700 years younger than Crater Lake.  There is a huge obsidian lava flow extending from the lip of the cone and spreading down through the valley.   We caught a shuttle bus to the rim of the cone where we had a fantastic view over the entire area.  We then drove a short way down the road for a look inside a lava tube.
