Mount St Helens - Friday 2nd July 2010

We took a run up to Mount St Helens which is a volcano that last erupted and blew it's side out in 1980, reducing the height of it by one third.  It was triggered by a 5.1 earthquake and the blast flattened all the trees which looks weird as there are still a lot of them laying on the ground all in the same direction.  The lava flow that followed was hundreds of feet thick and totally covered the lake and river below it as it travelled at 400 mph across the landscape.  In the years that have followed the lake and river have reappeard in a smaller form and the grass and trees have begun to reestablish themselves.  A very interesting place.

This volcano is massive and you can see the lava flows at the bottom
