Today we drove via Twisp to a town called Winthrop. Didn't know what to expect but when we got there we recognised everything. This is a beautiful old western town still with timber boardwalks and every building in the town is of the old west style. When we were in America in 2010 we stopped at this town and while walking the main street we saw a sign on the pub 'Fresh baked pies and pastries'. Well all you Australians will know that we were hanging for a meat pie. We raced inside only to find that they were fruit pies. What a disappointment. Anyway the town is lovely and this time we went through the Shafer Museum which was an extraordinary collection of items from the late 1800's and early 1900's and the gold mining industry in the area. Simon Shafer purchased the general store in 1943 from Guy Waring and during hard times when people couldn't pay him for goods and services he began accepting anything that they could give and hence he became a collector. When he passed away all the buildings and everything else was given to the Okanagan Historical Society who maintain the site for the people. After our day in Winthrop we drove out to Pearrygin Lake State Park to spend the night.

Monday 23rd July - Lake Chelan Washington State
We've driven a short way today to Chelan where we did a bike ride around the riverwalk trail before moving on to camp at Lake Chelan State Park.
The landscape is looking very dry and reminding us a bit of Australia
Although unlike Australia the lakes have plenty of water in them and they are everywhere
Time for a swim
A deer watching nearby
