Saturday 21st July 2018 - More Washington State

Thursday 19th July 2018 – Lake Roosevelt Washington State

Didn’t go far today, just further down the side of Lake Roosevelt to the Hunters campground.  We were on a fairly quiet road when we nearly ran into a moose.  Luckily there was no one behind us as we just stopped in the middle of the road.  A bit of an exciting moment but by the time I got the camera out to take a photo he was scampering off into the forest.

Another nice spot for a swim and happy hour, the temperature has been getting up to 96F each day.

Friday 20th July 2018 – Sanpoil River Washington State

We’ve gone a little further south where we came across Fort Spokane which was built in 1880 and is now preserved by the National Parks Service.  It was originally built for the purpose of protecting the Indians from the encroachment of the white European settlers onto Indian land.  We thought this a bit unusual as you would expect they would be protecting the whites.  By the 1900’s it was used as a boarding school for the Indians who’s children were taken away from them to learn to integrate with the whites and lose their culture as they thought that was the only way they would survive as a race.  Sounds like a similar story to our aboriginals.  In the fort’s final years of operation it was used as a hospital for the Indians who had contracted TB and finally closed down in 1929.

The scenery is becoming dryer and more stark

There are only three building still standing out of 46

We then drove down to Kellers Ferry and on the way a deer ran across in front of us.  This time I was more prepared with the camera and got a good photo.  We’ve made camp in the Indian reservation at the edge of the Sanpoil River.

Wheat fields everywhere

Went on yet another ferry

Saturday 21st July 2018 - Grand Coulee Dam

We drove down to the Grand Coulee Dam today and had a tour through the workings of the dam before heading on to Omak to spend the night at the 12 Nations Casino.

The dam is 500ft wide and 550ft high

Looking down the face of the dam from the top about a 350 ft drop

12 pumps that send water up into the lake to be dispersed throughout the Columbia Valley
